Turkey Earthquake: Ochsenknecht and Glööckler Experience Tremors in Istanbul

Thu 24th Apr, 2025

A series of earthquakes in Istanbul has caused widespread anxiety among residents of the bustling metropolis. Among those experiencing the tremors firsthand were German celebrities Natascha Ochsenknecht and fashion designer Harald Glööckler, both of whom shared their alarming experiences on social media.

The seismic events have reportedly led to panic in the city, particularly as Ochsenknecht, a well-known television personality, and Glööckler, 59, were filming a TV show at the time. In a series of posts, Ochsenknecht conveyed her distress, stating that she and Glööckler had rushed out of the venue in a state of panic. She reassured her followers that she was safe, adding that many others had also evacuated their buildings.

In a later video, she explained that she was staying in a hotel on the 34th floor and had begun packing her belongings, expressing her reluctance to spend another night there. However, she later posted an update indicating that she had ultimately chosen to sleep in her hotel room.

Meanwhile, Glööckler recounted his own experience from inside a vehicle, describing the urgency with which he had to exit the building. He highlighted the precariousness of staying in a hotel on the 33rd floor, expressing visible concern over the situation.

Adding to the narrative, Berlin-based comedian Tülin Sezgin, known for her role in "Conny from the Block," described her frantic escape from a shop during the tremors. She recounted feeling physically shaken and needing to hydrate after the experience. Sezgin, who had previously endured a devastating earthquake in Istanbul in 1999 that resulted in over 18,000 fatalities, reflected on the fear that such events invoke.

The earthquakes began on Wednesday, with the most powerful registered at a magnitude of 6.2 just before 1:00 PM local time. The Turkish disaster management agency, Afad, reported that the epicenter was located in the Marmara Sea, just off the coast of the city. Following this significant quake, multiple aftershocks ranging from magnitudes of 4 to 5 were recorded.

Turkey is situated in one of the most seismically active regions globally, and it is estimated that over a million structures in Istanbul are not adequately equipped to withstand earthquakes. The situation remains a critical reminder of the city's vulnerability to seismic events, prompting discussions about building safety and preparedness in the face of such natural disasters.
