CDU Urged to Address Pharmacy Challenges

Mon 24th Feb, 2025

The president of the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists (ABDA), Thomas Preis, has expressed hope for prompt assistance for pharmacies in light of the upcoming coalition government. With the Union likely to form a partnership with only one other party, Preis anticipates a relatively straightforward government formation process, despite the Social Democratic Party (SPD) likely presenting firm demands.

Preis noted that the absence of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in the Bundestag will likely simplify negotiations, as they will not be part of the new coalition. He acknowledged the longstanding tradition of the FDP in the parliament and the gap their absence will create.

In a potential coalition involving the Union and the SPD, it remains possible that Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach could retain his position. Preis, who operates two pharmacies in Cologne, which is Lauterbach's constituency, indicated that regardless of Lauterbach's title, he will continue to be significantly influential in health policy discussions.

Preis emphasized that the decisive factor for the pharmacy sector is not which party assumes control of the Federal Ministry of Health, but rather the actions they will take. He highlighted the positive feedback received from the parties regarding their intentions toward the pharmacy profession. The CDU, being the largest party, bears a substantial responsibility to ensure that the established objectives regarding pharmaceutical care through public pharmacies are effectively implemented.

The ABDA is advocating for an immediate program aimed at financially supporting pharmacies. Preis stressed the need for economic reinforcement and pointed out the pressing demands posed by demographic changes, including a growing elderly population and a decline in healthcare providers. The reduction of general practitioner practices necessitates that pharmacies step in to provide accessible support.

Pharmacists, recognized for their expertise in the healthcare field, could introduce new initiatives in primary care. This could include expanded roles in vaccinations and preventive health screenings. Preis underscored the importance of initiating preventive measures earlier and affirmed the availability of pharmacists to tackle these challenges.
