Controversy Arises Over Bundestag's Instagram Post Regarding Upcoming Vote

Thu 6th Mar, 2025

In a recent development, the official Instagram account of the Bundestag has come under scrutiny following a post that announced an upcoming vote involving the old Bundestag concerning a special fund for infrastructure and reforms to the debt brake, aimed at facilitating increased defense spending.

The parliamentary leadership of the Green Party, represented by Irene Mihalic, expressed concern over the nature of the post, which presents a proposal put forth by the CDU/CSU and SPD as a fait accompli, despite the fact that the relevant factions have yet to discuss the matter.

Mihalic emphasized the need for clarification from Bundestag President Bärbel Bas to ensure that there are no doubts about the impartiality of the parliament's online presence. She highlighted the importance of confirming that discussions are still ongoing and no final decisions have been made prior to the scheduled consultation by the Elders' Council on Thursday.

The post on Instagram included a graphic indicating that the old Bundestag would be called to make a decision, with the caption noting the necessity of a two-thirds majority to amend the constitution in relation to funding for defense and infrastructure.

It is worth noting that the proposal by the Union and SPD was only introduced earlier this week, and the Green Party has not yet indicated whether it will support the initiative. Meanwhile, the FDP has outright rejected the proposal. Without the backing of either the Green Party or the FDP, the anticipated new government will struggle to secure the required two-thirds majority in the old Bundestag, rendering the planned vote potentially meaningless.

Legal expert Sophie Schönberger commented on the situation, asserting that there are no constitutional issues with involving the old Bundestag in discussions about the proposals. She stated that the old Bundestag remains fully operational and capable of making decisions until the newly elected Bundestag convenes.
