Controversy Arises After Brixen Hotel Denies Accommodation to Alexander Gauland

The recent decision by a hotel in Brixen, South Tyrol, to refuse future bookings from Alexander Gauland, a prominent member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has sparked significant debate across Italy. Gauland, who has been a notable figure in German politics since co-founding the AfD in 2013 after a long tenure with the CDU, has expressed disappointment over his exclusion from the historic Elephant hotel.

According to reports, the incident occurred in October 2024, when the hotel operators communicated to Gauland that he would no longer be welcome as a guest. Elisabeth Heiss, the hotel's owner, later confirmed this decision, indicating that it stemmed from both personal and ideological reasons. She mentioned that while Gauland's family members would still be allowed to stay, the decision was made as a measure to maintain the hotel's liberal atmosphere.

Heiss elaborated that Gauland's presence could lead to disturbances among the other guests, suggesting that the hotel seeks to uphold a peaceful and welcoming environment. The Elephant, which has been family-owned since 1773, prides itself on providing high-quality hospitality and a harmonious experience for its visitors.

This decision has drawn criticism, particularly from Jürgen Wirth Anderlan, a politically independent representative in the South Tyrolean parliament. Anderlan condemned the hotel's action as a violation of freedom of expression, arguing that the management's stance contradicts their claims of supporting diverse opinions and tolerance.

Furthermore, the South Tyrolean Hotel and Restaurant Association (HGV) weighed in on the matter, reminding businesses that they are obliged to serve all customers during operational hours, regardless of their political beliefs. The HGV suggested that the hotel should have found a more diplomatic solution rather than publicly announcing Gauland's exclusion.

Conversely, some groups, such as the left-leaning platform Brennerbasisdemokratie, welcomed the hotel's decision, viewing it as a courageous stand against what they term Gauland's problematic political views. This reflects a broader societal divide in Italy regarding political affiliations and the responsibilities of businesses in accommodating diverse perspectives.
