Shooting Incident at Fort Stewart Involves Army Sergeant and Multiple Soldiers

Thu 7th Aug, 2025

FORT STEWART, Ga. -- An armed incident occurred on Wednesday at Fort Stewart, one of the largest Army bases in the United States, involving a sergeant who shot five fellow soldiers. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Sgt. Quornelius Radford, reportedly used a personal handgun, not an issued military weapon, during the shooting.

Details surrounding the motive for the attack remain unclear as authorities continue to investigate. The injured soldiers are currently in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery, according to Brigadier General John Lubas, who oversees the 3rd Infantry Division. General Lubas commended the soldiers who intervened and tackled Radford, stating that their actions likely prevented further injuries.

This incident has raised significant concerns regarding safety protocols on military installations, which are generally considered secure environments. The Army has confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the shooting and the extent of the injuries sustained by the soldiers.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex shortly before 11 a.m. Following the quick apprehension of the shooter, a brief lockdown was enacted at the base, lasting approximately one hour. After the situation was resolved, normal operations resumed at the main security checkpoint.

Radford, who enlisted in January 2018 and served as a supply sergeant without prior deployments, was reportedly facing legal issues unrelated to the shooting. He has a scheduled court hearing later this month regarding charges of driving under the influence.

The investigation includes assistance from the FBI, as this shooting follows a troubling history of violence on U.S. military bases, reminiscent of past incidents that have claimed numerous lives. Previous shootings at military installations, including the tragic events at Fort Hood and the Washington Navy Yard, have prompted ongoing discussions about gun policies and security measures within the armed forces.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to release more information regarding the incident and its implications for soldier safety on military bases.
