Russian strikes on Ukrainian aid centre reported to have killed 26
Ukrainian officials say at least 26 people were killed after Russian bombs struck an aid distribution centre in the village of Komyshuvakha, in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. Regional head Mykhailo Semikin said at least nine 3,000kg aerial bombs hit the area, leaving five people injured and 27 initially reported missing.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as utterly horrific, saying a local school being used for humanitarian purposes was struck first, followed by a second strike on the site where people had taken shelter. He shared footage showing a large crater left by Monday's attack, along with rescue teams searching through debris.
The Russian military has not issued any public comment on the strikes.
Authorities have warned the death toll could rise further, as a number of people remain trapped under rubble. Zelensky initially reported 18 deaths, but Ukraine's state emergencies service, DSNS, later confirmed 24 fatalities, including two rescue workers and four police officers.
