Pentagon Publicizes New UFO Files, Encourages Independent Public Review

Fri 8th May, 2026

The United States Department of Defense has initiated the release of a new collection of documents related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), commonly known as UFOs. This move marks a significant step towards increased transparency, enabling the public to independently assess information regarding unexplained aerial sightings and phenomena previously shrouded in secrecy.

The newly established online portal, developed in collaboration with several government agencies including the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, hosts a range of declassified materials. The initial publication features 162 files, comprising historical State Department communications, FBI reports, and transcripts from NASA missions.

Among the newly accessible records is an FBI interview with a drone operator who, in September 2023, reported observing a linear object emitting an intense light in the sky. According to the report, the object was visible for less than ten seconds before the light extinguished and the object disappeared from view. Another prominent file includes a NASA photograph from the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, capturing three points of light arranged in a triangular pattern. While the origin of these anomalies remains undetermined, recent analyses suggest the possibility of a physical explanation, though no definitive identification has been made.

The release of these documents is part of an ongoing process, with additional files slated for periodic publication. The initiative is rooted in legislation passed by Congress, which mandated the declassification and public release of decades' worth of material related to UAP sightings. This legislative action followed increased advocacy from some lawmakers, who pressed for greater openness regarding military encounters with unexplained aerial objects.

In 2022, Congress established a dedicated office to oversee the declassification and investigation of UAP-related documentation. The office's inaugural report in 2024 catalogued hundreds of new UAP incidents reported by military personnel and other government observers. However, the report concluded that there is no evidence confirming that the United States government has encountered or recovered technology of extraterrestrial origin.

Calls for transparency have been particularly strong among certain members of Congress, including a group of Republican representatives who have sought access to additional classified footage and documentation. Recent correspondence from lawmakers has referenced requests for dozens of UAP videos and expressed expectations for their future release. These efforts are intended to provide the public with comprehensive information and foster independent analysis of the available evidence.

Despite the growing volume of declassified material, experts have cautioned that some of the released videos and photographs may be subject to misinterpretation. Many UAP sightings have been attributed to advanced military technology, natural atmospheric phenomena, or misidentified conventional aircraft. The Department of Defense's 2024 report has specifically addressed and refuted claims that the U.S. government possesses alien technology or has confirmed the existence of extraterrestrial life.

The Pentagon's approach emphasizes transparency while encouraging the public to examine the evidence and draw their own conclusions. As the process continues, further documents are expected to become available, contributing to an expanding archive of information and facilitating ongoing research into unexplained aerial phenomena.
