Ford Initiates Recall of Over 850,000 Vehicles in the U.S. Due to Fuel Pump Concerns
Ford Motor Company has announced a significant recall affecting more than 850,000 of its vehicles in the United States. The recall is prompted by concerns that the low-pressure fuel pump within these cars may fail, which could lead to engine stalls while driving, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
The recall encompasses a diverse array of Ford and Lincoln models produced in recent years, including certain units of the Ford Bronco, Explorer, and F-150, as well as the Lincoln Aviator and Navigator, according to the documentation released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Starting Monday, July 14, Ford will begin notifying affected vehicle owners about the potential safety risks associated with the fuel pump failure. Although the company is currently developing a solution to rectify the issue, specific details regarding the timeline for the remedy have not yet been provided. Owners will receive a follow-up letter with instructions for taking their vehicles to authorized dealerships for the necessary service, which will be offered at no cost.
The NHTSA's report indicates that Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to this specific recall. However, the company advises owners to remain vigilant for warning signs. Prior to a complete fuel pump failure, drivers may experience symptoms such as diminished engine performance, a check engine light, or a reduction in power.
According to the recall report, the risk of fuel pump failure is heightened during warmer weather or when fuel levels are low. Factors leading to a loss of fuel pressure and flow may include internal contamination of the vehicle's jet pump, among others. Additionally, Ford has cited changes in suppliers during a review of its manufacturing processes as contributing to the issue.
Ford estimates that approximately 10% of the vehicles affected by the recall may be at risk of fuel pump failure. The models included in the recall span the 2021 to 2023 model years and consist of specific units of the Ford Bronco, Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, as well as the 2021-2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks (F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550). Other impacted models include select 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigators, Ford Mustangs, and F-150s, along with certain 2022 Expeditions.
