Bolsonaro sons Carlos and Jair Renan seek office in Brazil's Santa Catarina

Members of the Bolsonaro family are campaigning together in Brazil's southern state of Santa Catarina, as former president Jair Bolsonaro's eldest son Flavio runs neck and neck with incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the presidential race. Two of Flavio's brothers, Carlos and Jair Renan, are also standing for office in the region, in senatorial and legislative elections respectively.

At a rally in Joinville, supporters gathered for hours in cold, rainy weather to see Flavio Bolsonaro appear alongside his brother Carlos, 43, who is campaigning for a Senate seat. Flavio urged the crowd to back Carlos, highlighting that Santa Catarina has never been governed by the Workers' Party.

Carlos Bolsonaro, a Rio de Janeiro city councillor of more than 20 years known locally as 'Number 3', relocated to Santa Catarina only months ago to run for the Senate seat, saying he was drawn by the honesty and conservative values of the state's people. His running mate, Carol de Toni, told the rally that his experience managing a city as complex as Rio made him well suited to represent a calmer, less chaotic state, and praised the region's hard-working, conservative population as upholding the values associated with Jair Bolsonaro.

Jair Bolsonaro, the family's patriarch, has been sentenced to 27 years in prison over an attempted coup and is barred from taking part in the current campaign.
