Arson Suspect Apprehended After Fire at Pennsylvania Governor's Residence

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A man has been arrested following an alarming incident where he breached security at the Pennsylvania governor's mansion, causing a fire that forced Governor Josh Shapiro, his family, and guests to evacuate. Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, was taken into custody shortly after the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday.

According to police, Balmer scaled a nearly seven-foot iron security fence surrounding the property and gained access to the mansion, where he ignited a fire using a homemade incendiary device. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the governor and his family were safely alerted by state troopers at approximately 2 a.m.

Governor Shapiro, who had celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover with his family and members of the Harrisburg Jewish community just hours earlier, expressed determination in the aftermath of the attack. During a news conference, he conveyed that such violent actions would not deter him from his duties or his faith.

Police officials stated that Balmer was inside the residence for a brief period before fleeing the scene. He was apprehended later in the day, although authorities have not disclosed any information regarding his legal representation. Balmer's criminal history reportedly includes various charges over the past ten years, including assault and theft.

Shapiro condemned the incident, emphasizing the growing concern over violence in society. He remarked that regardless of the assailant's motives, such acts must not be tolerated, and he called for a collective response to prevent further occurrences.

The fire caused extensive damage to a significant room within the mansion, which is often utilized for hosting events and displays. Visual assessments revealed shattered windows, charred furnishings, and significant destruction indicative of the fire's intensity. Investigators remain active at the scene, with support pledged from multiple federal agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Justice.

In light of the incident, Shapiro has received numerous messages of solidarity from fellow governors and political figures. Former Pennsylvania Governor Mark Schweiker described the attack as a cowardly act, while Tom Ridge, another former governor, expressed his heartbreak over the damage to a residence he once called home. Both highlighted the necessity for accountability regarding this assault on public property.
