Brandenburg Launches Scholarship Program for Future Rural Doctors

Mon 28th Jul, 2025

In an effort to attract future medical professionals to rural areas, Brandenburg has introduced a scholarship program aimed at medical students. The program, which is open for applications until the end of August, offers successful candidates a monthly stipend of EUR1,000 throughout their studies.

The scholarship is part of a broader initiative to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the region. In return for the financial support, recipients will be required to commit to practicing medicine in a rural setting in Brandenburg for a minimum of five years after graduation. A total of 18 scholarships will be awarded at the start of the winter semester 2025/26.

Health Minister Britta Müller emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that ensuring a robust workforce in the healthcare sector is a significant challenge that needs to be addressed for the well-being of the community. Catrin Steiniger, chairperson of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Brandenburg (KVBB), expressed her support, sharing her own positive experiences working as a rural physician. She highlighted the close relationships with patients, the sense of responsibility, and the quality of life that comes with practicing medicine in these communities.

Since the inception of the Landärzte program in 2019, a total of 231 scholarships have been awarded, reflecting a commitment to bolstering healthcare services in less populated areas. This latest initiative aims to further reinforce this commitment by attracting new talent to ensure that rural residents have access to high-quality medical care.
