Pandemic Preparedness: Five Years Post-Corona - Brandenburg Lacks Mask Stockpile

Tue 11th Mar, 2025

As the fifth anniversary of the initial COVID-19 cases approaches, Brandenburg finds itself without a reserve of FFP2 masks, despite the lessons learned from the pandemic. At the onset of the crisis in early 2020, the region faced severe shortages of masks, hand sanitizers, and certain medications. This situation could potentially reemerge if a new wave of infections occurs.

The state government of Brandenburg has acknowledged the need for improved pandemic preparedness and is in the process of establishing an Enquete Commission to address this issue. However, a spokesperson from the Health Ministry confirmed that following the dissolution of the state pandemic reserve in 2023, no efforts have been made to replenish the stock of personal protective equipment (PPE), which includes masks.

The spokesperson emphasized that the limited shelf life of masks poses a significant challenge. FFP2 masks typically have a maximum usability period of three years, and once this time frame elapses, they cannot be utilized. As a result, Brandenburg has not secured storage facilities for a new mask supply.

During the initial wave of the pandemic in spring 2020, masks and other protective equipment became scarce. Both federal and state authorities worked to procure large quantities of these items, which were distributed to schools and childcare facilities to ensure that educational activities could continue amidst the crisis.

Currently, both federal and state governments are collaborating on a proposal for a 'National Reserve' of PPE. The concept is still in development, as noted by the Health Ministry spokesperson. Kristina Böhm, the chair of the Federal Association of Physicians in the Public Health Service, has called for a robust stockpile, asserting that responsibility for pandemic preparedness should not fall solely on local municipalities.

The breakdown of the coalition government in Berlin has delayed the progression of essential legislative measures aimed at enhancing pandemic readiness. Böhm expressed hope that these initiatives will not remain dormant and can be expedited under a new federal government.

The coalition in Brandenburg, comprising the SPD and BSW, has committed to strengthening the region's response to potential pandemics in its coalition agreement. The agreement indicates that the Enquete Commission will focus on evaluating the current state of the healthcare system in relation to pandemic management and identifying effective strategies for safeguarding public health.
