Ongoing Dispute Over Committee Leadership in Brandenburg's Education Sector

Tue 11th Mar, 2025

The AfD faction in the Brandenburg state parliament continues to assert its preference for Dominik Kaufner as the chair of the Education Committee, amidst growing tensions regarding his candidacy. The party argues that there is a deliberate campaign against Kaufner, aimed at undermining his position.

AfD representative Dennis Hohloch emphasized the need for a reevaluation of the circumstances surrounding Kaufner's candidacy. This comes after claims from representatives of the State Youth Council suggested that the domestic intelligence agency, the Verfassungsschutz, classified Kaufner as a confirmed right-wing extremist. However, an inquiry directed at the state government revealed that Kaufner is not recognized as a right-wing extremist by the agency.

Kaufner's previous attempt to secure the position ended in failure, drawing significant public protest. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the parliament to voice their opposition to his appointment as committee chair.

In a recent extraordinary meeting of the parliament's presidium, Kaufner's candidacy was once again dismissed. Niels-Olaf Lüders, leader of the BSW parliamentary group, confirmed that the AfD retains the right to propose candidates for the committee chairmanship. Notably, the party had previously attempted to nominate Kaufner for this role but was unsuccessful.

The ongoing dispute highlights the contentious nature of political appointments within the Brandenburg parliament, particularly in the context of education policy and representation. The AfD's insistence on backing Kaufner despite the opposition raises questions about the dynamics of party politics and the influence of public sentiment on legislative processes.
