Boston Dynamics, a leading robotics company, has announced a partnership with the Robotics & AI Institute (RAI Institute) aimed at accelerating the learning capabilities of its humanoid robot, Atlas. This collaboration seeks to implement advanced reinforcement learning (RL) techniques to enable Atlas to acquire new skills at a faster pace.
The main objective of this partnership is to refine how Atlas learns to perform various tasks, which is essential for the deployment of robots in diverse sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and domestic environments. The focus will be on RL, a training method where robots learn through trial and error, a process known for being time-consuming but efficient as it can be conducted in simulated environments rather than exclusively in the physical world.
Initially, both organizations will explore the transfer of simulation-based learning to real-world scenarios. The partnership will also aim to enhance the robot's movement and interactions within physical spaces, emphasizing dynamic locomotion and the manipulation of heavy objects. These tasks require a high level of coordination and synchronization between the robot's limbs, as well as the integration of the entire body's movements to manage various forces effectively.
Boston Dynamics and the RAI Institute were both founded by Marc Raibert, a former professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Raibert led Boston Dynamics for three decades and has shifted his focus to research at the RAI Institute, which he established in 2022. Boston Dynamics was acquired by Hyundai Motor Company in 2021, which currently funds both organizations to support Raibert's research initiatives. This collaboration with the RAI Institute is part of a broader strategy; in October, Boston Dynamics also entered into an agreement with Toyota to further the development of Atlas as a versatile robotic solution.
