BMG Spokesperson Hanno Kautz Resigns Immediately

Thu 28th Aug, 2025

Hanno Kautz, the long-serving spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), has announced his immediate resignation from the position he held for over seven years. In a communication shared via email, Kautz expressed his desire for new challenges and confirmed that he would be taking on different responsibilities within the ministry.

Kautz has served under both former Health Ministers Jens Spahn and Karl Lauterbach, and he took a moment to thank his three political leaders in his announcement. He specifically acknowledged the trust placed in him by the current Minister, Nina Warken, as she embarks on her tenure.

His announcement comes at a time when the BMG has been navigating the complexities arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has significantly shaped public health discussions in recent years. Kautz, who was appointed to the role by Spahn in 2018, has communicated through some of the most challenging periods in recent health history.

Following Kautz's departure, Hannes Böckler has been named as the new spokesperson for the ministry. Kautz requested that colleagues extend the same collaborative spirit to Böckler that he experienced during his tenure.

In recent months, Kautz was involved in a controversy concerning leaked internal information from the BMG. After a background briefing with Minister Warken, confidential details regarding legislative initiatives were leaked to the media. Kautz responded by issuing a statement to journalists announcing potential consequences and humorously suggested a reward for information leading to the identification of the leak.

This incident sparked discussions in the Bundestag, where Janosch Dahmen, health spokesperson for the Green Party, raised concerns about Kautz's comments, questioning whether he spoke on behalf of the minister during this matter. In response, Georg Kippels, a parliamentary state secretary at the BMG, noted that Kautz had acknowledged the inappropriate nature of his statements and emphasized the importance of maintaining trust and press freedom.

Kautz's exit marks a significant transition for the BMG as it continues to address ongoing health policy challenges and navigate the complexities of public health communication.
