Efficacy of Blue Laser Vaporization in Treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Wed 9th Apr, 2025

Recent research has demonstrated that blue laser vaporization is an effective surgical method for alleviating symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), while also preserving sexual function in patients. Published in The Aging Male, this study offers promising insights into the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms commonly experienced by older men.

The study conducted by a team of researchers from The Affiliated Taian City Central Hospital of Qingdao University involved 67 patients with a median age of 65 years, all of whom underwent blue laser vaporization surgery for BPH. The key objective was to evaluate the impact of this innovative technique on both urinary symptoms and sexual health.

Findings revealed significant improvements in several metrics, including the International Prostate Symptom Score and quality of life assessments. Additionally, the International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire for Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (ICIQ-MLUTS) scores showed marked enhancement post-surgery. Another important observation was the reduction in postvoid residual volume, indicating better bladder emptying.

Crucially, the study reported no significant changes in sexual function, as measured by the International Index of Erectile Function 5 and the Male Sexual Health Questionnaire for Ejaculatory Dysfunction. This indicates that blue laser vaporization not only improves urinary symptoms but also maintains sexual health, a significant concern for many patients undergoing BPH treatment.

Despite these promising results, the researchers acknowledged the need for further studies to evaluate the long-term effects of this procedure. They emphasized the importance of collecting additional clinical data and extending follow-up periods to better understand the longevity of the benefits provided by blue laser vaporization.

In conclusion, the findings from this study highlight blue laser vaporization as a viable surgical option for men suffering from BPH, offering a dual advantage of symptom relief while safeguarding sexual function, a consideration of utmost importance in this patient demographic.
