Bill Gates Announces Closure of His Charitable Foundation by 2045

Fri 9th May, 2025

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world's wealthiest individuals, has made a pivotal decision regarding the future of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Established in 2000 alongside his then-wife Melinda French Gates, the foundation has focused on global health, development, and education, reportedly investing around $100 billion to save an estimated 82 million lives since its inception.

Initially, the foundation was set to operate for 20 years after Gates' passing. However, at the age of 69, Gates has decided to expedite his philanthropic efforts, pledging to donate 99% of his estimated $168 billion fortune more quickly than previously planned. The foundation is now slated to cease operations in 2045, with a goal of distributing approximately $200 billion, contingent upon market conditions and inflation.

Following his separation from Melinda in 2021, the foundation's structure has evolved significantly. Melinda has since established her own charitable organization, focusing primarily on empowering women, increasing their representation in technology and political roles, and advocating for paid parental leave.

Warren Buffett, the renowned investor, has also been a significant contributor to the foundation, donating a total of $43 billion. However, he has indicated that no further funds will be directed to the Gates Foundation after his death, as his remaining wealth will be allocated to his children for their charitable pursuits.

The foundation has concentrated its efforts on providing access to vaccines in impoverished regions, combating diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Despite its achievements, the foundation has faced criticism for perceived bureaucratic inefficiencies and complex operational processes.

In contrast to the Gates Foundation, MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has emerged as one of the most significant philanthropists in recent history. Since 2020, she has distributed approximately $19.3 billion to over 2,450 nonprofit organizations, guided by a small team and a more streamlined approach.

Gates, Buffett, Scott, and other billionaires have often found themselves at odds with the current U.S. administration. Gates has been vocal in his criticism of budget cuts to the USAID program, attributing a rise in child mortality rates to these reductions. In a recent interview, he expressed concern over the impact of reduced aid on vulnerable populations.

As the Gates Foundation approaches its planned closure, it faces challenges from global trends where many nations, including the U.S., have slashed development aid budgets. Nonetheless, experts believe that the foundation's legacy as a model for philanthropy will endure, influencing future charitable efforts.

In a statement regarding his philanthropic intentions, Gates emphasized his commitment to ensuring that his legacy will not be defined by wealth but by his contributions to society.
