Tragic Loss at Berlin Zoo: Giraffe Max Passes Away

Tue 18th Feb, 2025

The Berlin Zoo is mourning the loss of Max, a 13-year-old Rothschild giraffe, who was euthanized following an accident during playful interaction with another giraffe, Mugambi. The incident occurred in the indoor enclosure where Max fell and was unable to stand back up, leading to a difficult decision by the zoo's staff.

Despite efforts to assist Max back on his feet, zoo officials noted that it is extremely challenging to help a giraffe after a fall. Jennifer Gübert, a biologist at the zoo, explained that the team had no choice but to provide Max with relief from his suffering. The staff expressed deep sadness over the loss of Max, noting his friendly and patient demeanor.

Max was not only a beloved resident but also played a significant role in scientific research. As the only giraffe in Europe equipped with a halter, he aided researchers in studying giraffe communication behaviors. This unique setup allowed scientists to gather valuable data on how giraffes communicate through vocalizations.

His untimely passing comes as a great shock, particularly since giraffes in captivity can live up to 35 years. The zoo has a history of tragic incidents, recalling a previous loss in 2015 when a young giraffe named Abasi was found deceased after becoming entangled in feeding nets.

Max's absence will be felt not only by the zoo staff but also by the visitors who cherished the opportunity to observe him. As the community reflects on his life, they remember him as a remarkable animal who contributed significantly to both the zoo's mission and scientific understanding.
