Berlin Introduces Walk-In Applications for New ID Cards

Wed 14th May, 2025

In a significant shift aimed at improving public service accessibility, Berlin's municipal offices have announced that citizens can now apply for new identity cards and passports without prior appointments. This initiative, effective today, marks the first time residents can access these services throughout the day without the need for scheduling a visit.

Nine out of the twelve districts in Berlin are participating in this program, with exceptions for Reinickendorf, Lichtenberg, and Pankow. The walk-in service is specifically for passport and identity card applications, allowing locals to visit their respective district offices during standard operating hours. Authorities have cautioned that those interested in utilizing this service should be prepared for potential wait times.

Efforts to reduce the backlog at citizen offices have been ongoing, with the Berlin Senate previously pledging to ensure residents could secure appointments within a 14-day timeframe. However, this goal has yet to be realized. To alleviate the pressure on these offices, digital services have been expanded, enabling residents to handle registrations and address changes online without needing an appointment.

The decision to allow walk-in applications aligns with previous advocacy by the city's leadership, including the Regierende Bürgermeister Kai Wegner, who has supported measures aimed at enhancing public service efficiency. This trial will assess the effectiveness of the initiative and its acceptance among the public.
