Fri 18th Apr, 2025

The summer semester has officially commenced in Berlin, signaling the end of the semester break and the return of thousands of students to university life. This week, the Humboldt University (HU) reported an enrollment of approximately 34,300 students for the summer semester, including over 5,000 international students. Among these, around 1,350 are new entrants.

Traditionally, most programs welcome new students at the beginning of the winter semester. The Free University (FU) indicated that it has roughly 32,940 enrolled students, with about 6,900 being international. The university has reported that only around 1,080 of these are first-year students, and the figures are still subject to confirmation.

At the FU, a mentoring program is available for newcomers, providing guidance from experienced students on various aspects, including housing in Berlin. A communal picnic is also planned to foster social interaction among the new students.

The Technical University (TU) currently boasts nearly 29,000 enrolled students. When factoring in doctoral candidates and those participating in special programs or as guest and side listeners, the total rises to approximately 36,130.

Additionally, the University of the Arts (UdK) has welcomed around 200 new students this semester. Starting in the upcoming winter semester, the UdK will collaborate with the HU to offer a new degree program that combines Fine Arts and Special Education under teacher training.

Currently, the UdK has about 4,100 enrolled students, including nearly 1,370 international students. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the university.

As for the overall number of students enrolled in Berlin's higher education institutions this summer semester, the state's scientific administration has yet to release comprehensive figures. However, it was reported that in the summer semester of 2024, there were nearly 188,320 enrolled students across Berlin's universities. Typically, student enrollment numbers are somewhat lower in the summer compared to the winter.
