Berlin's Swimming Pools Overrun Amid Intense Heatwave

Sun 22nd Jun, 2025

On what has been recorded as the hottest day of the year in Berlin, numerous public swimming pools have reached capacity, leading to the implementation of entry restrictions by pool management. This situation has necessitated police assistance to manage the crowds, as confirmed by a police spokesperson.

Particularly crowded locations included the Wuhlheide and Mariendorf swimming pools. Later in the day, police were dispatched to the Kombibad on Seestraße due to reported altercations among patrons. Eyewitness accounts indicated the presence of an ambulance at the scene, although further details were not disclosed.

The Berliner Bäderbetriebe (BBB) has introduced a flexible ticket pricing system and an alert mechanism in their online booking platform. Their website displayed that several pools were sold out for the day, including the Wuhlheide, Mariendorf, Columbiabad, Kombibad Gropiusstadt, Sommerbad am Insulaner, Sommerbad am Humboldthain, Freibad Pankow, Sommerbad Staaken-West, and Sommerbad Wilmersdorf.

In light of the overwhelming demand for a refreshing dip, the police took to social media to request understanding from the public. They acknowledged the high desire for relief from the heat but emphasized that space in the pools is limited, resulting in some facilities being unable to accommodate additional visitors.

As the day progressed, temperatures in Berlin soared above 30 degrees Celsius, prompting many residents to seek respite at local swimming venues. In some instances, officers assisted in persuading those waiting in line that it would be more prudent to return home, particularly at the Orankesee beach.

The police also appealed for respectful interactions among pool attendees, as incidents of violence have been recorded in the past at Berlin's swimming facilities. Maintaining decorum in these public spaces is essential, especially during peak summer days.
