Corruption Charges Against Berlin Prison Staff Over Favoritism

Tue 4th Feb, 2025

In a troubling case of alleged corruption, a 58-year-old prison employee in Berlin has been charged for accepting bribes in the form of fast food in exchange for preferential treatment towards two inmates. The Berlin public prosecutor's office announced that the employee is facing charges of bribery after a lengthy investigation revealed misconduct during the period between November 2018 and January 2019.

The accused is alleged to have allowed the two inmates, who had been granted open prison status, to return late to the facility and smuggled mobile phones into the prison. Open prison status allows inmates to leave the facility during the day for work, family visits, or other activities, but returning late can lead to a transfer to a more secure facility.

The prosecutor's office stated that the extensive investigation, which included covert surveillance, ultimately identified the corrections officer in question as well as the two inmates, now aged 32 and 48, who have since completed their sentences. The investigation highlighted significant lapses in protocol within the prison system that allowed for such breaches of conduct to occur.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the accused prison employee is still active in their position. The case underscores the importance of maintaining strict adherence to prison regulations to ensure the safety and integrity of the correctional system.
