Population Growth in Berlin Continues

Mon 3rd Mar, 2025

Berlin's population is on the rise once again, according to the latest statistics released by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office. As of December 2024, the city recorded a total of 3,897,145 residents officially registered as their primary residence in Berlin. This reflects an increase of approximately 0.5 percent, or 19,045 individuals, compared to the previous year. This marks the highest population count in the capital since 1991, a significant rise from 3,443,575 residents recorded in that year.

A major contributing factor to this growth is the influx of international migrants. In 2024, there were 25,509 new registrations of individuals with foreign nationality, bringing the total number of foreign passport holders in Berlin to 971,878. This means that nearly one in four residents, specifically 24.9 percent, now holds a foreign passport. The largest increases in population were seen in the districts of Reinickendorf, Marzahn-Hellersdorf, and Treptow-Köpenick.

Conversely, the number of residents with German citizenship has seen a decline. In 2024, the population of individuals with German passports decreased by 6,500.

The demographic shift is also evident in the aging population. The number of children under the age of six is steadily decreasing; the population in this age group fell from 222,650 in 2021 to just 208,938 in 2024. Meanwhile, the number of senior citizens aged 85 and older has risen significantly, increasing by nearly 22 percent since 2021. Currently, there are 120,246 individuals in this age group. Many elderly residents are located in outer districts such as Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Treptow-Köpenick, which house 11.9 percent and 10.8 percent of the city's senior population, respectively.
