New Commission Established to Develop Anti-Racism Strategies in Berlin

Thu 27th Feb, 2025

The Berlin Parliament has initiated a new commission tasked with formulating comprehensive strategies to combat all forms of racism, including antisemitism and discrimination against Muslims. During a recent plenary session, members of the Abgeordnetenhaus established this committee, which comprises politicians, scholars, and various experts in the field.

The newly formed Enquete Commission aims to foster social cohesion and create actionable proposals to address systemic racism and discrimination in the city. Notably, representatives from CDU, SPD, Greens, and Die Linke were appointed to the commission, receiving significant support from their respective parties. However, candidates from the AfD party were not included in the commission's composition.

This commission will consist of 26 members, with 14 being current members of the Abgeordnetenhaus and 12 serving as external experts. The commission is expected to commence its work by mid to late March and will operate independently of the day-to-day political activities, focusing on generating innovative ideas and recommendations.

The Abgeordnetenhaus is empowered to form such Enquete commissions to address complex and significant issues, allowing for a more in-depth analysis and preparation of eventual legislative decisions. Upon completion of its work, the commission will present its findings and recommendations in a comprehensive report to the Parliament.

The establishment of this commission reflects a growing acknowledgment of the need to address racism and discrimination in Berlin, as well as a commitment by various political factions to collaborate on this critical social issue.
