Construction of New Daycare Centers Halted in Kaulsdorf, Berlin

Wed 9th Apr, 2025

The district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf has decided to suspend the construction of new daycare facilities in Berlin-Kaulsdorf, citing an adequate supply of childcare spaces in neighboring areas. This decision comes amid a noticeable shift in the demand for daycare services across Berlin, where some kindergartens are beginning to close due to a lack of enrollment.

According to the district's administration, the site initially designated for a new kindergarten on Ulmenstraße 12 will be preserved, as confirmed by the Senate's response to local political inquiries. The district's councilor, in collaboration with the operator Kindergärten Nordost, has determined that the existing childcare provisions in Biesdorf and Mahlsdorf are sufficient to meet current needs.

Since 2013, approximately 2,800 new childcare spots have been created in these two neighboring districts, with the expansion efforts in Mahlsdorf continuing. This increase in available spaces is a direct result of the city's broader initiative to enhance childcare services across Berlin.

As the situation evolves, stakeholders remain watchful of how the balance between supply and demand for daycare facilities continues to shift in the coming years. The decision to halt the construction of new facilities reflects a proactive approach to managing resources and ensuring that existing services are fully utilized.
