Technical Glitch Causes Duplicate Mail-in Ballots in Berlin

Thu 13th Feb, 2025

In a significant administrative error, several district election offices in Berlin have mistakenly sent out duplicate mail-in ballots for the upcoming federal elections. This issue, revealed by Berlin's election leader, has affected multiple districts including Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Pankow, Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Tempelhof-Schöneberg, and Marzahn-Hellersdorf.

According to the election authority, approximately 800 cases of duplicate mail-in ballots have been identified out of a total of 750,000 ballots issued. In response to the error, the election offices will invalidate the duplicate ballots and issue a third mail-in ballot to the affected voters, ensuring they can participate in the election scheduled for February 23.

Election leader Stephan Bröchler expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging that while the overall preparations for the federal elections are proceeding smoothly, this error is unfortunate. He indicated plans to utilize the rights granted in the state election law to standardize work processes further, aiming to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

This incident comes on the heels of previous election-related mishaps in Berlin, notably during the 2021 federal and state elections, which led to a complete rerun of the state election and partial reruns in federal election districts due to various operational failures.

In light of these past issues, the current administration, led by a coalition of the Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats, has announced a reform of the Berlin electoral law to enhance the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process.
