Berlin Considers Raising Speed Limits from 30 to 50 km/h

In Berlin, city officials are examining the possibility of increasing the speed limit on certain road segments from the current 30 km/h to 50 km/h. This proposal has sparked a wave of criticism.

The ongoing debate around traffic regulations was a significant factor in the recent elections for the Berlin House of Representatives. The ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is now facing the challenge of addressing persistent traffic congestion in the city. Transportation Senator Ute Bonde has advocated for a review of the 30 km/h speed limits and the potential reinstatement of 50 km/h on select routes. Criticism of this approach has emerged swiftly.

Bonde stated that the impact of a 30 km/h limit on traffic flow is not necessarily beneficial. She emphasized the need for a balanced approach to ensure efficient traffic movement. Currently, the city's transportation department is preparing a comprehensive air quality management plan and a noise action plan, which will inform decisions regarding the removal of speed limits in certain areas. Bonde reiterated that the default speed limit remains at 50 km/h.

Former transportation senator Manja Schreiner had indicated last year that the 30 km/h limits established for environmental reasons on 34 major roads might need reevaluation, contingent upon road safety conditions. A new air quality management plan was anticipated for discussion last summer; however, no decisions have been finalized.

The proposal to revert to a higher speed limit has drawn sharp criticism from environmental groups. Gabi Jung, the director of the Berlin chapter of the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND), expressed concerns that the changes would make Berlin's streets more hazardous for vulnerable road users. She pointed out that the stopping distance for vehicles traveling at 50 km/h is significantly greater, raising safety concerns. Furthermore, Jung argued that increasing the speed limit would not necessarily lead to smoother traffic flow.

As the discussion continues, the balance between improving traffic conditions and ensuring safety for all road users remains a contentious issue in Berlin's transportation policy.
