Baden-Württemberg Ministries Continue to Rely on Fax Machines Amid Digital Push

Despite ongoing efforts to modernize administrative communication, government ministries in Baden-Württemberg continue to use a significant number of fax machines. According to recent data, more than 1,400 fax devices remain operational across the twelve ministries of the regional government.

The Ministry of the Interior, which is also responsible for overseeing digital transformation, accounts for 568 of these units, including those used by the four regional administrative authorities. The Ministry of Justice operates at least 585 fax machines, while the Ministry of Finance maintains 164, the Ministry of Education 53, and the Ministry of Agriculture 41. In contrast, the State Chancellery, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Ministry of Transport have reportedly phased out traditional fax devices entirely.

Fax Machines as Backup Communication

Officials state that fax machines are rarely used for routine administrative communication. Instead, the devices are retained primarily as a fallback option when electronic channels are unavailable or when legal requirements necessitate formality and adherence to deadlines.
