In Baden-Württemberg, the presence of fake speed cameras has sparked curiosity and debate. Recently, two towns have reported the installation of these imitation devices, with one being removed while others continue to operate without issue.
The first notable fake speed camera was located in Frittlingen, where it gained significant attention. After approximately three weeks, local authorities decided to dismantle the camera, prompting concerns about the return of speeding drivers. Prior to its removal, many motorists had slowed down in the vicinity of the imitation device, adhering to speed limits.
According to a local resident, Thilo Wenzler, who had placed the fake camera on his property, he was instructed by the police to cover the device while legal matters regarding its status were reviewed. Consequently, he wrapped the imitation camera in a protective cover.
In contrast, Blumberg has three fake speed cameras that have been in place for several years. One of these devices has been operational since 2016, appearing overnight without any clear indication of who installed it. The local mayor, Markus Keller, noted a significant reduction in speeding incidents within the 50 km/h zone since the camera's introduction. He referred to the device as a form of public art, emphasizing the lack of complaints regarding its presence.
Additionally, two more fake speed cameras were introduced in the Blumberg neighborhoods of Kommingen and Achberg, both of which have also gone unchallenged. Mayor Keller expressed satisfaction with the situation, suggesting that the absence of complaints over the years indicates a level of tacit approval from the community. He highlighted the previous dangers posed by speeding vehicles in the area, particularly concerning the safety of children and residents.
Despite the effectiveness of these imitation cameras in reducing speeding, Mayor Keller expressed a desire for a legitimate speed enforcement solution, although he acknowledged the financial implications of installing an official speed camera.
In Frittlingen, the police are currently evaluating the legal implications surrounding the removal of the fake camera. They clarified that while a harmless imitation is not inherently illegal, they are still examining potential legal ramifications.
Legal experts have noted that the more realistic a fake speed camera appears, the greater the likelihood of facing legal challenges. However, the situation in Blumberg seems to be regarded differently, with the authorities maintaining a relaxed stance towards the imitation devices.
