Study Reveals Audiologist-Fitted Hearing Aids Offer Greater Benefits Than OTC Options

A recent study has revealed that hearing aids fitted by audiologists significantly outperform over-the-counter (OTC) options in providing benefits to users. Published in the prestigious journal JAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the research highlights the effectiveness of professional fitting compared to self-fitted alternatives.

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Iowa and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, involved 245 participants aged over 55 who experienced mild to moderate hearing loss. None of the participants had prior experience using hearing aids, making the findings particularly relevant for new users.

Participants were randomly assigned to one of six groups that represented a combination of different service models and technology levels. The service models included:

  • AUD: Participants received prescription hearing aids fitted by audiologists following best practice guidelines.
  • OTC+: Audiologists offered limited support for OTC hearing aids.
  • OTC: Participants independently used OTC hearing aids without any professional assistance.

Two technology levels of prescription hearing aids were utilized during the trial: a high-end model featuring advanced capabilities and a lower-end version. The outcomes were measured using the Glasgow Hearing Aid Benefit Profile (GHABP), which assessed the benefits users experienced post-intervention.

The results indicated that the AUD model had significantly higher GHABP scores compared to the OTC+ and OTC groups, with differences of 0.33 and 0.32 points respectively. Notably, when pre-intervention scores were accounted for, the differences between the OTC+ and OTC groups were not statistically significant. Both the OTC+ and OTC groups reported GHABP global scores approaching 4 points, reflecting positive experiences with the devices.

The researchers concluded that while OTC options and limited audiologist support can be effective, they do not match the benefits provided by the comprehensive fitting services associated with the AUD model. This highlights the importance of professional guidance in achieving optimal hearing outcomes for individuals with hearing loss.

Two authors of the study disclosed financial ties to hearing aid manufacturers Signia and ReSound, which may be pertinent to consider when interpreting the results.
