Asteroid Exploration Mission Faces Setback as Spacecraft Odin Loses Communication

Mon 3rd Mar, 2025

The ambitious plans for asteroid mining have hit a significant roadblock as the California-based space startup AstroForge has reportedly lost contact with its spacecraft, Odin. The mission aimed to explore asteroid 2022 OB5, but challenges have arisen that cast doubt on its success.

AstroForge's CEO, Matt Gialich, shared in a recent blog post that efforts to re-establish communication with Odin are ongoing. While the company believes that the spacecraft remains on its intended trajectory, it is currently experiencing a slow spin, which complicates the situation.

Communication issues have plagued the mission since its early stages, as Gialich noted in a video shared on the social media platform X. These initial problems with ground stations likely hindered the team's ability to intervene effectively. The last signal from Odin was received about 21 hours post-launch.

Odin was launched on February 26 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, alongside a lunar lander named Athena. The primary objective of Odin was to gather data on the asteroid to evaluate the potential for resource extraction, which would involve flying in close proximity to the asteroid and capturing high-resolution images.

The target for this mission is asteroid 2022 OB5, which is believed to belong to the M-class category, potentially rich in metals such as iron and nickel, as well as precious metals including platinum, ruthenium, and iridium. Despite the current setbacks, AstroForge is not discarding hopes for Odin's mission just yet. However, the prospects of continuing the mission appear to be diminishing, according to Gialich's statements.

Although the current situation presents a significant challenge, Gialich reassured stakeholders that no matter the outcome with Odin, the insights gained will inform future missions. AstroForge plans to make another attempt within a year, with the aim of refining their approach to asteroid mining.

Founded in 2022, AstroForge aims to become the first company to successfully mine resources from asteroids. The development of Odin was completed in a remarkably short period of ten months.
