A significant incident of arson has occurred in a shelter located in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, which provides accommodation for refugees and homeless individuals. A 25-year-old man has been taken into custody following the fire, with a warrant issued against him on charges of arson, as confirmed by police authorities.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene, where he was reported to have been residing. According to preliminary investigations, he allegedly set the fire on Friday evening around 11:45 PM at a building situated on Markgrafendamm. This facility, primarily an office building, is partially used as a living space for vulnerable populations.

The fire reportedly originated in a room on the first floor of the three-story structure, producing heavy smoke that spread throughout the building. Firefighters responded promptly, and many residents had already managed to escape by the time help arrived. Rescuers used ladders to evacuate nine individuals and three dogs, while three additional residents were rescued through the stairwell.

In total, 65 individuals were forced to evacuate the premises and were subsequently relocated to emergency shelters, as stated by police. One man sustained a hand injury due to the flames and received outpatient treatment for his wounds.

Following this incident, the shelter has been declared uninhabitable. The fire department reported that approximately 60 rescue personnel were dispatched to tackle the emergency.
