The Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) has announced significant workforce reductions, planning to eliminate 254 full-time positions as part of a strategic restructuring aimed at achieving financial stability. The broadcaster aims to save approximately 22 million euros, with the restructuring set to commence later this year.
According to rbb officials, nine million euros of the savings will be allocated to ensuring the broadcaster's financial viability by 2026. The remaining 13 million euros will help fund ongoing digital modernization efforts and programming enhancements.
Currently, the rbb's personnel and honorarium expenditures total 215 million euros. The proposed cuts represent a 10.2 percent reduction in these costs, highlighting the broadcaster's need to recalibrate its financial strategy after years of budget constraints.
Ulrike Demmer, the broadcaster's director, emphasized the necessity of a sustainable restructuring plan, stating that the rbb remains financially precarious despite previous cost-saving measures. She noted that a successful turnaround requires a fundamental reassessment of both expenditures and revenues.
The rbb has faced ongoing challenges, particularly following controversies surrounding former director Patricia Schlesinger, which have negatively impacted the broadcaster's reputation on a national scale. As the rbb navigates this turbulent period, a future agreement will outline the parameters for the organization's reorientation and clarify which divisions will be affected by the impending cuts.
