APT Package Manager Releases Version 3.0.0 with Enhanced Features

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

The APT package manager has officially launched version 3.0.0, introducing significant enhancements to its user interface aimed at improving usability.

This new release signifies the conclusion of the 2.9.x development branch, with all previous updates and improvements now integrated into this stable version. The lead developer announced the release on social media, noting that while not every feature he envisioned made it into this version, the final product exceeded his initial expectations.

Future developments are planned for the APT package manager. The developer mentioned that further work is required for the 'modernized-sources' feature, as well as for enabling translations of error messages related to the new dependency resolver, which may be included in upcoming 3.0.x versions. This release is also dedicated to the memory of a prominent Debian developer who recently passed away.

The official announcement highlights that the primary change is the elevation of the version number to mark the beginning of the stable 3.0.0 development branch. The icons have been updated to match the previous apt version 2.9.35, and minor refinements have been made to the newly integrated 'solver3' for package dependency resolution. Furthermore, several updated translations have been included.

Notably, most of the changes were implemented during the 2.9 development phase. The upcoming Ubuntu 24.10 has already transitioned to this preview version, which features a significantly improved command-line interface for better visibility during package installations and removals.

APT 3.0 introduces color-coded indicators for packages scheduled for installation or removal, enhancing clarity and organization. The layout has been redesigned to resemble a table format, which makes it easier to read instead of displaying package names in a long, uninterrupted list. Additionally, the progress indicators for downloads and installations have moved away from the traditional monochrome display, ushering in a new era of colorful interfaces.

This release of APT 3.0 arrives just ahead of the anticipated Ubuntu 25.04 release. Its initial inclusion will occur in the Unstable branch of Debian, leaving it uncertain whether the final version of Ubuntu 25.04 will utilize APT 3.0.
