Apple Struggles to Improve Siri Amidst AI Challenges

Fri 11th Apr, 2025

Apple has faced significant challenges in enhancing its voice assistant, Siri, delaying improvements and facing internal turmoil. Reports indicate that the release of a smarter version of Siri has been postponed by a year, reflecting ongoing issues within Apple's artificial intelligence (AI) division.

Initially, following the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022, Apple executives, including AI chief John Giannandrea, were skeptical about the potential of chatbots to deliver real value to users. This skepticism led to a series of missteps in the development of Siri, as the company struggled with inconsistent strategies for its AI models, causing frustration among developers.

Apple's approach to Siri has reportedly oscillated between various models, including plans for both on-device and server-based AI solutions. The lack of a clear direction contributed to staff turnover and project delays, with internal groups even nicknamed "AIMLess" due to their perceived aimlessness in developing AI capabilities.

Despite initial expectations that better training methods and data scraping could resolve Siri's limitations, the team focused primarily on minor enhancements. Notably, a recent demonstration at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 showcased features that were not yet functional, including real-time access to email for flight information. This revelation surprised even team members, as they had only activated a redesigned interface rather than a fully upgraded AI.

In response to these setbacks, Apple has appointed Mike Rockwell as the new manager for Siri. Rockwell previously led the development of the Vision Pro, a groundbreaking product for the company, and is now tasked with revitalizing Siri's capabilities.

As Apple continues to navigate these challenges, the future of Siri remains uncertain, with many looking to Rockwell's leadership for a turnaround.
