Launch of Analogue 3D Retro Console Delayed Until July 2025

Wed 19th Mar, 2025

The highly anticipated Analogue 3D retro gaming console, designed for original Nintendo 64 (N64) games, will now be released several months later than initially planned. The manufacturer has announced that the console's launch is pushed back to July 2025, marking a significant delay from its previous schedule.

Originally revealed in autumn 2023, the Analogue 3D was set to allow players to enjoy N64 titles in stunning 4K resolution. The console aims to provide a modern gaming experience while maintaining compatibility with classic games via original cartridges. However, the new release date indicates that fans will have to wait longer than expected.

Despite the anticipation, the company has not provided specific reasons for this postponement. Pre-orders for the Analogue 3D have been available since last year, and customers are assured that they can cancel their orders at any time before the release date, with full refunds promised.

The Analogue 3D is designed to support N64 games in resolutions up to 4K, alongside retro display modes that emulate the experience of playing on vintage CRT televisions. Unlike traditional emulators, this console utilizes FPGA technology, allowing it to play games in their original format seamlessly. It boasts compatibility with the complete library of games from Nintendo's iconic 1996 console. Players can simply insert their cartridges and start gaming, although it is important to note that the console does not come with a controller included. Customers can purchase a separate controller for $40 or alternatively use their existing N64 controllers.

As the delay unfolds, it appears that Analogue may face competition from a new entrant into the retro console market. Palmer Luckey, founder of ModRetro and known for his role in developing Oculus technology, hinted at a potential N64 console of his own via a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). His cryptic message included symbols suggesting a connection to the N64, and he referenced the iconic choice between a red and blue pill from the film 'The Matrix', which has sparked speculation about ModRetro's forthcoming announcement.

Luckey has previously developed the ModRetro Chromatic, a remake of the Game Boy, but his recent post does not confirm an official product launch. A user expressed interest in the Analogue 3D, to which Luckey responded that it is "never too late to change one's mind," further fueling conjecture about ModRetro's plans for entering the N64 console space. The ModRetro account also shared Luckey's post, indicating that an announcement regarding the "M64" could be imminent, pending the finalization of its branding.

As the gaming community eagerly awaits both the Analogue 3D and any potential offerings from ModRetro, the landscape for retro gaming continues to evolve, promising exciting opportunities for enthusiasts of classic gaming experiences.
