Aliyev Calls for Accountability from Moscow Following Plane Crash
In the wake of a tragic plane crash involving an Azerbaijani passenger aircraft that resulted in the loss of 38 lives, President Ilham Aliyev has made strong allegations against Russia, demanding an acknowledgment of responsibility. The incident occurred in Russian airspace over the Chechen city of Grozny, where the aircraft reportedly came under fire from the ground.
President Aliyev stated that the aircraft lost control due to the deployment of radio-electronic warfare systems, which he claims was the initial cause of the aircraft's malfunction. Subsequently, it was struck by gunfire. Despite the assertion that the Russian air defense did not intentionally target the Embraer aircraft, Aliyev expressed concern that certain factions within Russia may be attempting to obscure the true cause of the crash.
During an interview with Azerbaijani state television, Aliyev criticized the initial responses from Russian officials, which he described as "ridiculous theories." He underscored the importance of a clear acknowledgment of responsibility from Russia, alongside demands for accountability and reparations for the victims' families.
Aliyev's comments came after Russian President Vladimir Putin offered an apology for the incident. However, Aliyev emphasized that the Russian authorities had propagated unfounded narratives, including claims of a gas balloon explosion, which he interpreted as an effort to deflect blame.
At a memorial service held at Baku's airport, Aliyev paid tribute to the victims, including three crew members, and commended the bravery and professionalism of the pilots who managed to execute an emergency landing in Kazakhstan.
The crash has raised significant tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia, with Aliyev asserting that the final conclusions regarding the incident will only emerge after the analysis of the aircraft's black boxes. He reiterated the need for transparency and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The ongoing situation highlights the complex geopolitical relations in the region, as Azerbaijan seeks clarity and justice following this tragic event. The international community is closely monitoring developments, urging all parties to engage constructively in the investigation.
