Alaska Airlines Halts Flights for Several Hours Due to IT Issues

Mon 21st Jul, 2025

Alaska Airlines temporarily suspended all flight operations for several hours on Sunday evening due to significant software issues. By 8 AM CEST the following day, the airline announced that the problems had been resolved and flights had resumed.

Initially, the technical difficulties affected over 200 aircraft, including those operated by the airline's subsidiary, Horizon Air. The interruption began around 10 PM local time (7 AM CEST), as the airline took to social media to inform passengers of the IT outage, urging them to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Although the airline confirmed that operations had restarted, they cautioned that the effects of the disruption would linger, resulting in delays as normal service levels returned.

Alaska Airlines, which is based in Washington state near Seattle, primarily services airports across the United States, parts of Canada's West Coast, and Central America. The airline's fleet comprises 238 Boeing aircraft of various models and 87 from Embraer.

This incident follows a history of technical challenges for the airline, including a notable event a year and a half ago when a structural failure occurred mid-flight, necessitating an emergency return of a Boeing 737 Max to its departure airport.

As of now, further details regarding the cause of the recent IT failure have not been disclosed, leaving many passengers and industry observers awaiting additional information.
