Arnulfpark Hauptbahnhof, © München Tourismus, Sigi MuellerThe MVG (Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft) has recently announced its new timetable changes for the upcoming year, and it is set to bring some exciting improvements, especially for users of the U5 subway line and various bus routes in Munich.

Starting from December 10, 2023, the changes will mainly focus on expanding essential services, such as better connections to new residential areas and schools.

The Public Transport System (ÖPNV) faces several challenges: a shortage of personnel and skilled workers has resulted in an insufficient number of drivers available. At the same time, passenger numbers have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, and operating costs have increased significantly due to rising energy prices and relevant collective bargaining agreements.

Despite these challenging circumstances, the MVG has made it clear that the service will not be reduced but rather improved for both the U-Bahn (subway) and bus services. This information was released in an official press statement from the city.

New MVG Timetables: Which U-Bahn Lines Are Affected?

One of the significant improvements affects the U5 subway line. Starting in 2024, it will run at a 5-minute frequency all day long, instead of only during peak hours as it did before. As a result, the U4 line will only operate between Arabellapark and Theresienwiese, no longer extending to Westendstraße.

Changes in Bus Services

The ExpressBus X80 will now operate on Sundays and public holidays from 8 AM to 8 PM, running every 20 minutes between Lochhausen Bf and Moosach Bf. This enhancement will provide residents of the new residential area, Osterangerstraße, with public transport access on Sundays and public holidays. Additionally, the Bus 55 will now run every 10 minutes on weekdays between Waldperlach and Putzbrunn, instead of the previous 20-minute intervals.

Furthermore, Bus 57 will operate until 8:30 PM, providing an extended service for an additional hour at a 10-minute frequency between Neuaubing West and Freiham. The Bus 143 will begin its operation at 6:02 AM instead of 6:42 AM from Freiham, and the night lines N80 and N81 will serve the new stop, Kleiberweg, in Lochhausen.

Are There Any Changes to the Tram Services?

Additional service measures are planned for the following tram lines during the course of the year: 57, 135, 139, 143, 154, 157, 162, 163, 178, 182, 184, 189, and N77. Moreover, in collaboration with the Munich district, three new express bus lines will operate to and from the city.

With the MVG's new timetable adjustments set to be implemented in 2024, Munich's public transportation system will witness significant enhancements, ensuring better connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. The increased frequency of U-Bahn and bus services will undoubtedly lead to more convenient and efficient travels throughout the city, further solidifying Munich's reputation as a model urban center that prioritizes sustainable and citizen-centric transportation solutions.
