In response to escalating crises worldwide, Welthungerhilfe has called for increased diplomatic efforts to resolve international conflicts. The organization emphasizes that cutting humanitarian aid will only exacerbate existing problems, particularly in regions such as Sudan, the Middle East, and Ukraine.
As we approach 2025, the need for stronger commitments to negotiation and compromise in conflict situations has never been more critical. The organization's Secretary-General highlighted the necessity of not only maintaining but also enhancing humanitarian aid funding to meet the growing demands of affected populations.
In Sudan, the protracted civil war has led to one of the largest displacement crises globally, with approximately 11 million people fleeing their homes and around 26 million facing severe hunger. The humanitarian situation is dire, with over 750,000 individuals at risk of starvation.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the ongoing conflict continues to disrupt daily life, with civilians suffering from unpredictable military attacks. Support for immediate needs, such as housing repairs and winter supplies, remains crucial, alongside the provision of psychological assistance to those affected.
The Middle East also requires continuous humanitarian support as the situation evolves rapidly. Access challenges for aid workers in regions like Gaza have become increasingly problematic, hindering relief efforts. Additionally, after a decade of conflict, the humanitarian situation in Yemen remains alarming, with the country ranking near the bottom of the World Hunger Index.
Welthungerhilfe stresses that to address these pressing issues, it is vital to shift from temporary assistance to more sustainable, long-term support strategies. Ensuring safe access for aid workers to reach those in need is essential for effective humanitarian interventions.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of preserving our collective humanity amid ongoing crises. As conflicts become more intense and disregard international norms, it is critical to maintain solidarity with those suffering from wars and disasters.
As 2025 approaches, the challenges posed by the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Sudan demand immediate attention and action from the global community.
