Due to the heavy rainfalls of the last days, the water level of the Isar river has increased dramtically. Furthermore, the water is very turbid, there are currents and in many places the river carries driftwood. Nevertheless there were numerous boaters on the Isar on Saturday 4th July 2020. As a result, eleven rubber dinghies capsized within a few hours and 32 people had to be rescued from the water.

Several boats were trapped at the water cylinder at the Marienklause, on the southern outskirts of Munich. Only with the help of the water rescue service were the boat crews able to reach the shore. One person even had to be rescued by a cable winch with a rescue helicopter.

Another boat was wedged between tree trunks at the Thalkirchner Brücke near the zoo Hellabrunn. The boat was so badly damaged that there was danger to the lives of the occupants.

The city of Munich has therefore reacted to these incidents and has forbidden navigation on the Isar between the Großhesseloher Weir and the Flaucher until further notice. The Department of Health and Environment announced on Sunday that there is a considerable danger to life when people navigate the Isar with boats and other floating objects of any kind.

All rescue operations result in dangerous situations for everyone involved, including the rescuers. That is why nobody should go into the Isar river at the moment, neither to swim nor to go boating, says Daniela Haupt, spokeswoman of the Munich district water rescue service.
