Europe's most powerful computer, is open for business

A super-computer near Munich is the world's 4th fastest computer, it is cooled with water, and has nearly 150,000 microprocesors. It is called SuperMUC, and was built by IBM, for the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre) in Garching, near Munich. And, one of the most innovative features of the SuperMUC is how it cools down: instead of using air like most computers, the IBM Aquasar system pumps water over the microprocessors, which heat up the water. This in turn is then re-circulated to other parts of the building housing SuperMUC, which serves to heat up the building during winter. The Aquasar system is expected to cut down cooling costs by up to 40%, according to IBM.
