Mannheim witnessed a serious traffic accident late Friday night on Siebenbürger Straße, involving a 57-year-old man driving a Ford. According to preliminary investigations, the driver lost control of his vehicle, likely due to excessive speed, and veered off the road. This resulted in a head-on collision with a Volkswagen Golf driven by a 27-year-old.

In the Golf, there was also a 28-year-old passenger. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene and discovered that the Ford driver exhibited signs of intoxication, with a significant odor of alcohol present.

A voluntary breathalyzer test indicated a blood alcohol content of 1.4 per mille, well above the legal limit. The driver of the Ford sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital, where a blood sample was drawn for further analysis. Both the driver and passenger of the Volkswagen Golf also experienced minor injuries and received medical attention.

Due to the severity of the crash, both vehicles were rendered inoperable and required towing. The authorities initiated a cleanup operation on the roadway, which was closed between Theodor-Storm-Straße and Ilvesheimer Straße until approximately 3:30 AM.

The total damage from the incident is estimated at around EUR25,000. Following the accident, the driver's license of the 57-year-old was confiscated, and he is expected to face charges related to endangering public safety on the road. The Mannheim-Käfertal police precinct took charge of the accident investigation.
