ZAMS Celebrates a Decade of Innovation in Clinical Pharmacy

Thu 2nd Oct, 2025

The ZAMS (Center for Clinical Pharmacy) marks its ten-year anniversary, reflecting on numerous successful initiatives that have significantly impacted patient care. The collaboration between the University Hospital Leipzig's clinical pharmacy and the Institute of Pharmacy has fostered a unique environment where clinical practice and research are closely intertwined.

Professor Thilo Bertsche, the research director of ZAMS and head of the Clinical Pharmacy Department, emphasizes the value of this integration, which allows for scientific monitoring and evaluation of patient care interventions. Dr. Yvonne Remane, the head of the pharmacy at the University Hospital Leipzig and director of ZAMS for patient care, notes that this close cooperation facilitates the provision of evidence-based medication management at the bedside.

Among the notable achievements of ZAMS is the introduction of clinical pharmacists at the University Hospital Leipzig. These pharmacists collaborate with physicians at the patient's bedside, helping to manage medication regimens. This initiative not only alleviates the workload for physicians and nursing staff but also significantly reduces the risk of medication errors and adverse drug interactions, directly benefiting patients.

Professor Bertsche states that the positive outcomes of these initiatives have led to requests from teaching hospitals seeking support in implementing similar programs. One of the center's goals is to extend these innovative concepts beyond the university hospital setting to a broader audience.

Professor Christoph Josten, the medical director of the University Hospital Leipzig, highlights the critical role of medications in treating various conditions, stressing the importance of their judicious use while considering both benefits and risks. The active initiatives at ZAMS are carried out alongside the regular responsibilities of its team members, and the achievements are attributed to their strong commitment and dedication. Josten expresses hope that this commitment will be recognized and rewarded in the future.
