Leader of the Young Liberals Highlights Need for Unity Amidst Challenges

Thu 27th Feb, 2025

In a recent discussion, the chair of the Young Liberals emphasized the urgent need for unity within the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in light of its recent electoral setbacks. Franziska Brandmann described the party's poor performance as a significant setback, urging members to focus on constructive solutions rather than engaging in internal conflicts.

Brandmann pointed out that since 2017, the FDP has stalled in its modernization efforts, failing to maintain the momentum achieved in the earlier years. During the period from 2013 to 2017, the party successfully adapted and attracted new voter demographics while refining its policy positions. However, she noted that in recent years, this progress has stagnated, resulting in an inability to secure a stable voter base above five percent. She asserted that everyone within the party shares responsibility for this decline, herself included.

Looking ahead, Brandmann advocated for a structured renewal process akin to the one the party underwent previously. She stressed the importance of reassessing the party's guiding principles, which emphasize courage, optimism, and empathy, and suggested the potential for further evolution of these ideals.

Regarding personnel changes, Brandmann recognized the significance of experienced members such as Wolfgang Kubicki and Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann but cautioned against hasty decisions in the wake of the electoral defeat. She argued that before discussing new leadership, the party must engage in a comprehensive evaluation of past errors.

When asked about her own ambitions for leadership, Brandmann stated that now is not the right time for personal ambitions. With many skilled individuals within the party facing job losses due to the electoral outcome, she emphasized the need for collective reflection rather than immediate leadership contests. Christian Lindner's announcement of stepping down after more than a decade at the helm adds to the urgency of this introspection.

The Young Liberals have previously proposed a modernization plan for the party, which includes innovative ideas such as dual leadership structures and online primaries. Brandmann expressed a desire for the FDP to emerge as the most modern political party in Germany by 2029, highlighting the importance of organizational and content-focused renewal.

As the party faces pressures from both the far-right and left, Brandmann warned against internal divisions. She underscored the necessity of maintaining solidarity among liberals and focusing efforts on external threats rather than engaging in factional disputes.
