The Eurobike event in Frankfurt has witnessed the launch of Yamaha's latest innovation, the PW-X4, a state-of-the-art motor designed specifically for electric mountain bikes (E-MTBs). This new motor not only boasts impressive performance but is also lightweight, reaffirming Yamaha's commitment to advancing e-biking technology.
The PW-X4 is positioned as Yamaha's most powerful motor to date, reflecting the growing demand for enhanced performance in the e-mountain biking sector. With a maximum torque of 100 Nm and peak power output reaching up to 800 watts, the PW-X4 meets the competitive standards of 2025. This places it on par with offerings from Bosch and Brose's Qore system, which Yamaha recently acquired.
Weighing in at just 2.6 kilograms, the PW-X4 remains lightweight, ensuring that riders can enjoy an agile biking experience. A notable feature of this motor is its Zero-Cadence function, which allows for immediate power engagement, enhancing the responsiveness during rides.
During the exhibition, attendees had the opportunity to test ride the PW-X4 mounted on a Raymon E-MTB. The motor exhibited robust performance, particularly in the higher assistance levels, while maintaining a commendably quiet operation. The initial, energy-efficient setting is unobtrusive, allowing cyclists to tackle uphill challenges with ease by shifting to at least the third assistance level. The bike smoothly ascended to the fifth floor of a parking structure without needing the ten-second boost feature.
The PW-X4 is part of a broader system known as PW-Link, which Yamaha also introduced at Eurobike. This system includes two additional motors: the lightweight PW-L1, which delivers 60 Nm of torque, and the versatile PW-S3, providing up to 85 Nm of torque. All components, including batteries, displays, and controls, are designed for compatibility and customization, allowing users to tailor their e-biking experience.
Yamaha plans to launch the new PW-Link app in spring 2026, which will integrate the various system components. This app aims to enhance connectivity and security, featuring live location tracking, a digital lock, an immobilizer, and other IoT functionalities, all made possible through a partnership with the Estonian company Comodule.
The introduction of the PW-X4 signifies Yamaha's dedication to innovation in the e-mountain bike market, promising enthusiasts a new level of performance and connectivity.
