The Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem, located in Jerusalem, is set to open an educational center in Germany. This initiative aims to enhance Holocaust education and awareness, with three German states currently under consideration for the site: Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony.
The announcement was made by Dani Dayan, the director of Yad Vashem, alongside German Federal Minister of Education Karin Prien in Berlin. The concept for the center originated during the administration of former Chancellor Olaf Scholz. A feasibility study identified these three states as potential locations based on factors such as accessibility and the existing landscape of memorial sites.
This facility will mark Yad Vashem's first expansion outside of Israel and is intended not as a museum but as a center for education. Dayan emphasized that the focus will be on the activities and programs conducted within the center rather than its architectural form. The aim is to bring the perspective of Holocaust victims into the realm of their historical perpetrators.
In the coming weeks, representatives from Yad Vashem plan to visit the three identified states to engage with government officials and members of civil society. A decision regarding the final location is expected to be made in the first half of 2026, with the center projected to begin operations two to three years thereafter. The educational facility is anticipated to employ around 20 staff members and will cater to a broad audience, with a particular emphasis on supporting teachers.
Minister Prien expressed gratitude for Yad Vashem's initiative to establish this center in Germany, highlighting the ongoing challenge of antisemitism faced by educational institutions. She noted that teachers will require comprehensive professional support in addressing this critical issue.
