Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to embark on a four-day state visit to Russia, commencing on May 7, 2025, coinciding with the celebrations marking the end of World War II. The trip aims to solidify the strategic partnership between China and Russia, with multiple agreements expected to be signed during this significant diplomatic engagement.
According to statements from the Kremlin, Xi's visit will involve discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the enhancement of bilateral relations. It has been indicated that various agreements and documents will be finalized by government officials and ministers from both nations.
In addition to the formal discussions, Xi will attend commemorative events on May 9, which celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. He will join other international dignitaries, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, at this prominent event in Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed concerns regarding potential Russian actions during the May 9 celebrations, suggesting that there could be provocations or false flag operations aimed at blaming Ukraine. He has underscored the uncertainty surrounding Russia's intentions on this historical date.
In response to Zelensky's comments, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused him of making direct threats against veterans participating in the Victory Day parades. The ministry's spokesperson alleged that Zelensky's remarks could incite violence against those honoring the day.
Putin has proposed a temporary ceasefire during the commemorative period in Ukraine, aiming to ensure that the celebrations are not disrupted by conflict. However, Zelensky has dismissed the notion of short-term ceasefires, stating that they are insufficient for meaningful negotiations towards resolving the ongoing conflict.
Since the onset of Russia's military operations in Ukraine in February 2022, China has maintained a stance of neutrality, asserting that it does not provide military assistance to either side. Nevertheless, Beijing has notably strengthened its political and economic ties with Moscow during this period. Accusations have been leveled against China for allegedly aiding Russia in circumventing Western sanctions.
Zelensky has previously accused China of supplying weapons to Russia and sending troops to aid in the conflict against Ukraine, claims that Beijing has categorically denied as baseless.
