World's Youngest Premature Baby Celebrates First Birthday

Sat 26th Jul, 2025

Iowa, USA - Nash Keen, born at just 21 weeks gestation, has defied the odds and celebrated his first birthday recently. Weighing a mere 283 grams at birth, Nash was comparable in size to a smartphone and faced a daunting chance of survival. However, his remarkable story of resilience has captured the attention of many.

On July 5, 2024, Nash was delivered 133 days before his due date at the Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa, where his mother, Mollie Keen, had been advised of the risks due to a previous medical condition. Despite the grim prognosis for infants born prior to 22 weeks, Nash's fight for life began immediately as he was placed in intensive care.

Mollie Keen never lost hope for her son, highlighting the dedication of the medical team that supported Nash during the critical early months of his life. The first six months were spent on a neonatal intensive care unit, where each day brought new challenges and milestones.

As Nash celebrated his first birthday, it was announced by the Guinness World Records that he is now recognized as the youngest surviving premature baby in history. He surpassed the previous record holder, who was born on the same date in 2020, by just one day.

While Nash continues to require medical assistance, including supplemental oxygen and specialized feeding, his development has been promising. His family reports that he is gradually gaining strength and is learning to stand on his own. There are plans for him to begin transitioning to solid foods soon.

Mollie expresses her hopes for her son's future, wishing for him to grow up healthy, confident, and aware of the love and support he has received throughout his journey. Each day remains a celebration of his life and progress.

This extraordinary case serves as a testament to the advancements in neonatal care and the indomitable spirit of both infants and their families.
