WhatsApp Introduces Creative Features for Temporary Status Updates

Mon 2nd Jun, 2025

WhatsApp has announced an enhancement to its temporary status update feature, allowing users to express their creativity through a variety of multimedia options. The new functionalities, which include image collages, music, and stickers, will enrich the 24-hour status updates.

With the latest update, users can now go beyond simple text-based statuses. They can incorporate images, music tracks, and stickers to make their status updates more engaging. Additionally, the platform will enable users to invite their contacts to interact with their statuses, fostering greater communication and engagement among friends and family.

The rollout of these features is currently underway and is expected to be available to all users in the coming months. This update is part of a broader trend of continuous innovation from Meta Platforms, the parent company of WhatsApp. Just weeks prior, Meta announced the introduction of AI-generated summaries for WhatsApp messages, aimed at helping users manage their extensive chat histories more efficiently.

While the AI summary feature is not yet available, the new multimedia status updates are already accessible to some users. Within the WhatsApp application, under the 'Status' tab, users can create a status that disappears after 24 hours. This section now allows for the selection of text, music, layout, and voice options, with the added capability to capture spontaneous photos or videos directly through the app.

For music, WhatsApp has partnered with a library that contains millions of tracks, allowing users to search for songs by title or artist. However, there are limitations: music can accompany photos for up to 15 seconds and videos for up to 60 seconds, while voice messages can also be up to 60 seconds long.

The collage feature enables users to select up to six images, which can be arranged using various editing tools provided within the app. Although the images cannot be freely placed, they can be organized in predefined rectangular grids. Furthermore, users can transform a selected photo into a sticker and add it to their status update.

After posting a status, contacts have the option to respond by adding their own contributions, enhancing the interactive experience of status updates. As of the latest version of WhatsApp, users on Android devices can already explore these new features, making their status updates more dynamic and personalized.
